Creating art while freaking out

Throughout the summer, whenever I thought about the upcoming semester I would always feel this pit in my stomach. Not only is my schedule packed, but I have filled what would be rest time with other things including going to the gym in the mornings, working everyday and making time to study and complete assignments. After the first week of classes, I felt right in being worried about my time management this semester. While I love the major I am pursuing, I realize more and more everyday just how time consuming it is. Outside work is an unspoken requirement of musical theatre, it is always noted how you only get as much out of class as you put in, and so much of that is linked to the work you do outside of class. I’ve been going to studios to sing and dance almost everyday for the past week. I was able to create a little bit of really fun choreography that I am excited to finish and present to my classmates. Of the times I’ve been in the studio the most fun are the times spent with friends. I love to collaborate with my classmates in dance and make something new and unique that we could not have made individually.

On Friday we start production for one of the many fall shows this semester. I am excited to be a part of a show again, the last show I did was “9 to 5: the musical” here at Ohio Northern University. Our head designer is planning on taking us to the Hardin County Fair this weekend, which sounds like it could be a lot of fun! This show is my first one in the small black box theatre located in Freed so I am interested to experience that environment for the first time. We also had our auditions this week for the annual Ohio Northern University Holiday Spectacular, which I am feeling good about! I love Christmas time and the annual holiday show is a great way to get in the Christmas spirit! Even though this semester has an overwhelming feeling, there is a lot in store as far as productions and I couldn’t be more excited to participate and get involved!

  1. I feel the exact same way. After the first week it kind of hit me how much less time I have this year. I was actually super stressed out one night just thinking about my schedule, plus being in a show and all of the out of class work we have to do. It's hard to find time for me. Guess we just need to get used to it.
