An Organized Mess

We are quickly approaching week three of this semester, and I am still feeling just as overwhelmed as I was on day one. We started rehearsals for one of Ohio Northern University’s theatre productions this past Friday. This means that every day until the end of October, I will have a four-hour-long rehearsal starting at either six or seven in the evening. Balancing my schedule has been challenging over the past two weeks, and now adding a production process has required me to stay very organized with my priorities. I am concerned about keeping track of everything, but I am hopeful that I can persevere.

In other news, I was appointed as the dance captain for the current show. This role involves learning all the choreography and possibly running a dance rehearsal if the choreographer is unavailable. Fortunately, we have a student choreographer, so I do not anticipate having to take on this responsibility.

Last week, we had auditions for the annual “Holiday Spectacular,” and on Monday, the cast list was posted. I am fortunate to be cast in the show. However, this means that after the current production concludes, I will have only two days of rest before starting the next one. Thus, I will have very little free time until the holiday show ends in early December.

On a positive note, I’ve been in touch with the head of dance at Ohio Northern University, and there are some exciting opportunities on the horizon. I will be assisting with the musical theatre dance portion of our auditions and helping plan “Work It Wednesday!”—a series of dance classes open to all students on campus. I will be teaching a few of these classes this semester and am looking forward to working with a new group of students.

While this semester is full of stressors, there is also much to look forward to. My strategy is to stay on top of my work when possible and to focus on the positive aspects of my experiences.

  1. Your plan of staying on top of work whenever possible and focusing on all the positive aspects that this semester can bring is such a good idea! I can relate to being stressed out currently, with all the unknowns a new semester can bring. I hope to stay organized with my schedule, as in staying on top of my school work as well as having time for my extracurriculars on campus, just like you said. I am also looking forward to this upcoming school year, even with all the assignments and stressors that come along with it. We got this!

  2. It sounds like you’re juggling a lot, but you seem to be handling it exceptionally well. Congratulations on being appointed as the dance captain and landing a role in the Holiday Spectacular! I’m confident that all your hard work will pay off. I can relate to balancing school with extracurricular activities, as I’ve been managing it alongside track. Best of luck with your rehearsals and everything coming up—I’m excited to hear how it goes!

  3. I've also been in the middle of rehearsals for Commedia which is four hours a night. It is exhausting, especially doing homework at 10:30 p.m. after a super draining rehearsal. I'm also trying to figure out how to balance all of this right now, it is a bit overwhelming. Also, congratulations on Holiday and becoming dance captain for Ride the Cyclone! And I'm super excited for you to teach "Work It Wednesday!" again.
